Since the controversial catering company Caterlink took over the Reading Council area school meals contract, significant changes have been made to the food choice being offered to Reading’s school children. Following this the take-up of school meals has dropped significantly compared to before the pandemic.

Green councillor Rob White said, “Since Caterlink took over the Reading Council area school meals contract we received feedback that the menu isn’t as good as it used to be and that children are opting out. Following negative feedback the menu has been tweaked slightly, but more is needed.
“We have asked the council about this and been informed that take-up of school meals has fallen. Nutritious meals are important for our children’s education and a healthy midday meal is essential for children’s development and well-being. Tell us what your child or young person thinks of the new school meals and we will keep working to improve them.”
Greens led the way in ensuring that the council is a Living Wage employer. The new Caterlink contract delivers staff at least a Living Wage and Greens have campaigned for the expansion of free school meals and for ingredients in school meals to be as sustainable as possible.
