East Reading MRT refused

Wokingham Borough Council's planning committee have voted (now for the 2nd time) to refuse Reading Labour's plans to build a destructive Road by the River Thames (East Reading MRT).

Well done to the Save Our Ancient Riverside campaigners and everyone else who has taken part in this campaign. We should not rest on our laurels however, and Reading & Wokingham Green Party will keep campaigning for action which truly tackles the congestion and air pollution in East Reading – such as a Low Emissions Zone. We will also do our best to make sure Reading Labour don't waste any more taxpayer money on this scheme – they have already spent over £500,000 which could have been spent on other transport projects.

Campaigner David McElroy said: “The Council’s own modelling shows that this scheme would do nothing to tackle congestion and air pollution problems on London Road, but would definitely lead to the loss of green space and woodland which benefits the health and well-being of the people of East Reading.

“This is great news, we don't know what Reading's Labour Council will do yet, but fortunately people love east Reading and its two rivers, and local residents will keep standing up for green spaces and pushing for a scheme that truly tackles congestion and air pollution.”
