Berkshire councils are exporting masses of recycling collected to overseas destinations. In 2016/17, Reading sent 1,253 tonnes of paper and card and 79 tonnes of plastic to locations in Asia, and a further 1,482 tonnes of paper and 13 tonnes of plastic to Europe. Wokingham meanwhile sent 1,818 tonnes of paper and card across the globe.
Rob White, Green Party councillor said: "it's shocking that so much of Reading's waste goes halfway around the world to China and that some of it might not be recycled. Reading Council already has an appalling recycling rate which has fallen in recent years from 32% down to 30%. Reading Council needs to show it cares about the environment by recycling locally in a caring environmentally friendly way. What we need is a national recycling system with national recycling infrastructure. Until we get that, Greens in Reading will continue to push for more recycling measures such as food waste collection."
