At the Reading Council budget meeting, the Green Party proposed reversing Labour’s cut to homelessness support services.
The number of people sleeping rough in Reading has increased by over 400% since 2010 and is still going up. The amount of money spent on agency staff has ballooned out of control in recent years. From 2015, it has increased by almost 50% up to £14.4 million.
The Green Party proposed fast tracking plans to replace expensive agency staff with permanent staff. Money saved would be used to reverse Labour’s cut to homelessness support services.
Green Councillor Rob White said: “With homelessness and rough sleeping predicted to rise nationally, the Conservative government’s continued cuts to benefits and council funding, and the national and local housing crisis, now is the time to invest in tackling homelessness and rough sleeping.”
Unfortunately this Green Party budget amendment was defeated, but the Greens say they will “keep up the pressure on this important issue”.
