Labour Council consulting on cutting library opening hours

Labour councillors have voted to consult on reducing the library opening hours in six of the seven branches to contribute to an estimated saving of £217,000.

Green councillor Rob White voted against this proposal saying: “If the cuts go ahead, all the libraries will suffer; for example, Palmer Park, which is my local library, will only be open in the daytime and not at all at weekends. How are working people expected to access this library? I think the council needs to take another look at the large amount of money wasted on consultants rather than cutting this essential public service.”

The public consultation process runs for 4 weeks and asks residents and library users for feedback on cutting library opening hours and other cuts to the service.
