2017 is going to be a big year for Big Lunch street parties in Reading. In 2016, the town was ranked the third friendliest town in the UK by Big Lunch organisers because of the number of events organised. This year Reading is going for gold, and Green Party councillor Rob White is encouraging people to organise their own Big Lunch.
Big Lunch street parties are organised by members of the local community who want to bring their friends and neighbours together. Events could range from a get together, and a cup of tea, in a back garden to closing off an entire street and everyone bringing a dish to share. Big Lunch street parties can have a positive long term effect on an area. They allow people to make new friends, try new foods and change the neighbourhood. Lots of people who’ve held a Big Lunch have gone on to do much more to make the place they live safer, more vibrant and more connected.
Green councillor Rob White said: “Big Lunch street parties are a great way to build community across Reading. After being ranked as the 3rd friendliest town in the UK last year I think this year we need to go for gold. It would be great to see a Big Lunch street party in every road. We have set up a Facebook group to allow Big Lunch street party organisers to talk to each other and to help support new street parties to get off the ground. I encourage everyone to think about organising a street party on their road.”
