Thank you for all your support!

Quintupling (x5) Reading Central vote share!

A big thanks for all of your support. In Reading Central Green MP candidate Dave McElroy quintupled (x5) our vote share. He finished in a very respectable third place with 14% of the vote overall. This is an amazing result for the Green Party locally.

Quadrupling number of Green Party MPs!

Across the country the Green Party has quadrupled its number of MPs winning all of our national targets. We now have four hard-working Green MPs to hold the new Labour government to account and push for policies to tackle the climate crisis, fund the NHS and make sure everyone has a decent roof over their heads. They will also keep working for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and for hostages to be released.

Other great results

A big shout out to Green MP candidate for Earley and Woodley Gary Shacklady for getting 7.4% of the vote, Merv Boniface in Wokingham on 3.6%, Carolyne Culver in Reading West and Mid Berks on 6.8% and Steve Masters in Newbury on 5.5%.

Once again a massive thank you for all of the support and don’t forget to join if you are not already a member: https://join.greenparty.org.uk/.

Best wishes,

Rob

Greens have celebrated the amazing local election results where the Green Party was the only party in Reading to achieve a net gain in councillors – in the Reading Central MP area Labour have 21 councillors, there are eight Greens, only three Conservatives and no Lib Dems. Following this the Green Party is taking up more committee places than ever before.

The Green Party now has eight councillors. They were offered 23 places on committees by the council, and they have taken up 20 of them. For the first time ever, the Green Party is covering all of the main committees. They are covering both a greater number and percentage of committee places than any other year.

Councillor Rob White (Green Party, leader of the main opposition party on Reading Council) said: “This year we had amazing council election results where Greens were the only party to achieve a net gain of councillors. The Green Group is covering more committees and committee places than ever before.

“Greens are working hard on committees holding Labour to account on the lack of affordable housing in the town, worsening congestion, and Labour’s failure to tackle the climate emergency.

“Green councillors are also out all year round knocking on doors, talking to residents and tackling local issues like missed bin collections, potholes and graffiti.”

He added, “We’ll keep focusing on doing what residents want us to do – work hard for a fairer, greener and cleaner town.”

“Overall in Reading Greens were the only party to gain a seat (8), Labour stayed the same (32), Conservatives lost a seat (4) and Lib Dems stayed the same (3).

“This result sends a message to Labour that they can’t take people’s votes for granted. And that you can vote Green and get Green. We will keep working for a fairer, greener and cleaner town.

“Thanks again everyone for your support and hard work.”

The Green Party is a standing candidates in every ward across Reading.

The Green Party are currently the main opposition party on Reading Borough Council, with more councillors than both the Conservatives and Lib Dems. They have councillors in Park, Redlands and Katesgrove wards.

The make-up of the council is 32 Labour, seven Green, five Conservative, three Lib Dem and one independent.

Kate Nikulina (Green Party, Katesgrove Ward) said: “Under the Labour-run council our area is blighted by potholes, overflowing bins, antisocial behaviour, congestion and air pollution. Carbon reductions have stalled, people can’t find a dentist and we don’t have enough affordable housing. Greens have campaigned tirelessly with residents to tackle these issues.

“Over the last year Greens have had success tackling bin problems, poor quality privately rented accommodation and road safety issues.

“There are wards in Reading where the Green Party stands a good chance of winning this year, but the results are likely to be close.

“Labour have a massive majority on the council and it’s likely that they will run the council whatever happens. The current balance is 32 Labour councillors, seven Green councillors, five Conservatives, three Lib Dems and one independent.

“Voting Green will mean you get not only a hard-working representative on the council making a difference all year round, but keep a strong main opposition party holding Labour to account for their actions.

“Vote Green for a fairer, greener and cleaner town.”

Unfortunately, at the end of the university term ,many roads in east Reading were filled with rubbish again. Green councillors made sure that the extra university funded bin collection happened. They also reported household waste illegally dumped at hotspots like the Erleigh Road bottle bank.

Councillor Dave McElroy says, “Green councillors will keep up the pressure for an extra end of term bin collection after every term. Also don’t forget that the council now offers every resident two free bulky waste collections per year.”

Kate Nikulina, Katesgrove resident and Green campaigner says, “The IDR underpass is how many people get in and out of Katesgrove. We have successfully worked with Katesgrove Residents Association and cross-party for some improvements, but it still looks rundown and feels unsafe. We are currently lobbying the council to tackle the graffiti and plant trees to give Katesgrove the gateway it deserves.”

The council has continued to fall short with regards to bin collections, missing on average at least 616 bin collections each month: over double their performance standard of 250. Over the year so far on average 616 people per month have reported having their bins missed. But not everyone files a report so the actual number of bins missed is far larger.

Previously, Greens have successfully campaigned for a narrower waste collection vehicle in order to reduce the number of bins missed but clearly more is needed.

Councillor Dave McElroy (Green Party, Redlands Ward) has been working on this issue. He said: “Recently reports of missed bin collections have been very high. Too many bin collections are not being collected, sometimes whole roads. This is causing frustration as well as contributing to litter and fly tipping. First of all the council needs a decent system so it can drill into the reasons these bins are being missed. This will then allow them to focus work more effectively to tackle this problem. Greens will keep lobbying for action.”
